History

AmCham France was founded by eleven US businessmen in Paris on Thursday, June 28, 1894, making it the oldest US business association overseas. Its stated mission was to "take measures which may facilitate and protect the transactions of business between French and American interests and to collect information to facilitate business operations."

The Chamber's first major banquet, on July 4th 1895, was attended by the Foreign Minister, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, the US Ambassador, and Frederic Bartholdi, the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty. At this dinner, AmCham President and co-founder Stephen Tyng further defined the Chamber's role: "Our vocation, in a word, is to be the unofficial hyphen, or trait d'union, between the public authorities and the private enterprises of these two nations, France and the United States." During his farewell address as AmCham President, Tyng added that "the interweaving of French and American interests in a bond of commercial union will be the best contribution we can make to the larger hopes of the coming century."

While AmCham France has undergone many changes since 1894, its fundamental mission remains very similar to what its founding fathers defined.


1912 – Les guerres franco-américaines de la porcelaine
La porcelaine de Limoges, dont la fragilité est bien connue, a donné lieu à deux petites guerres franco-américaines !
1910 – Un banquet du 4 Juillet
Pendant de nombreuses années, le banquet du 4 Juillet a été l’événement le plus important de l’année pour l’AmCham et ses adhérents.
1915-You are Allowed to Call in English!
En 1915 la AmCham fit une démarche bien étrange auprès du Ministre du Commerce et de l’Industrie, des Postes et des Télégraphes. Elle sollicita « de sa bienveillante considération » l’autorisation d’utiliser l’Anglais au telephone.
1900 - L’AmCham et l’Exposition Universelle
Fondée en 1894, la jeune Chambre de Commerce Américaine s’est préoccupée très rapidement de l’Exposition Universelle qui devait se tenir à Paris en 1900.
1951 - La fin de la Bibliothèque Franklin
La Bibliothèque Benjamin Franklin de l’American Chamber of Commerce était très importante et elle comportait plus de 23,000 volumes dans un très beau cadre.
1894 - Le premier président, le Dr.Stephen Higginson Tyng
Lorsqu’elle s’est créée le 28 Juin 1894 au Grand Hotel, rue Scribe, la Chambre de Commerce américaine porta à sa présidence une personnalité hors du commun, le Dr.Stephen H.Tyng.
1896 - L’AmCham soutient le système métrique !
Les hommes d’affaires américains en France rencontraient de nombreuses difficultés avec les unités de mesure. Pendant plusieurs années, la Chambre s’efforcera de faire adopter le système métrique aux Etats-Unis.
