    Mr. Alex DORRIAN

    Topic: "The Defense Market Today"
Thales Group is a leading international electronics and systems group serving defense, aerospace and security markets worldwide, supported by a comprehensive services business. The group's civil and military businesses develop in parallel to serve a single objective: the security of people, property and nations. Thales employs 70,000 people in 50 countries and generates annual revenues exceeding $13 billion. Mr. Alex Dorrian, is the Executive Vice President of International Operations, the CEO of Thales UK, and is responsible for Thales in the United States and Canada.
For the last six years as UK Chief Executive, Scottish-born Mr Dorrian has achieved a remarkable feat: he has won a sizeable chunk of the UK defense market in the most competitive defense market in the world, while climbing almost to the top of one of Europe’s largest global groups. Recently Thales has won a string of impressive contracts: involvement in the multi-billion pound deal to build two new aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy; prime contractor slot in the MoD’s first major Unmanned Air Vehicle programme and in the Future Integrated Soldier Technology project for the British Army; and agreements to build new tanker aircraft for the Royal Air Force. Mr Dorrian has over-seen a period of considerable expansion in Thales UK’s civil business, particularly in intelligent transport systems and identity management.
In the United States he has helped transform Thales from an equipment supplier into a significant player in developing complex systems for defense equipment and software which plays a pivotal role in the US defense. The company has focused on the security of people, property and nations on commercial and military aviation, communications and transportation. Thales is a partner on the ITT team which won the US Federal Aviation Administration ADS-B program. It has concluded major alliances with large companies like Raytheon and DRS.
Mr. Dorrian graduated from Strathclyde University in Scotland in 1970 with an Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering. He became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1993 and is also a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology. He was elected a Companion of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 2002.
Mr. Dorrian was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen's 2002 New Years Honours list. He is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Engineers and a Freeman of the City of London. Married to Frances, he has a daughter Juliet and a son Graham. Mr. Dorrian will speak in English.
