HIV/AIDS: 25 Years Later = Which Challenges Remain?
Françoise BARRÉ-SINOUSSI, AIDS pioneer, is the extraordinary co-winner of the Nobel Prize of Medicine for 2008 for the discovery of “human immunodeficiency virus”, a professor at the Institut Pasteur and a Research Director at INSERM. She has worked in retro virology research since the 1970s and wrote the first publication in 1983 on the retrovirus name HIV.  One of few women to ever receive a Nobel prize in medicine, she identified this devastating virus and has initiated research programs for vaccines and other regulations aspects such as its transmission such between mother to new born child.
Along with her research activities, Françoise BARRÉ-SINOUSSI has been strongly implicated in promoting integration between HIV/AIDS research and actions in resource limited countries, in particular through the Institut Pasteur International Network, helping transfer of technology in Asia (Cambodia and Vietnam) and Africa. She says that only 30% of AIDS patients receive treatment and that many people in western countries are neglecting the fatal aspects of this disease. Around the world, about 33 million people are living with HIV/AIDS and two million die each year. It has killed at least 25 million BUT there is hope for a new vaccine.
She has co-authored over 200 scientific publications, has participated in over 250 international conferences, and has trained many young researchers. She constantly works on establishing permanent links between basic research and clinical research with the aim of achieving concrete improvements in the areas of prevention, clinical care, and treatment.  Françoise BARRÉ-SINOUSSI will speak to us in English. This is NOT TO BE MISSED!
